The Bridge

A Poem

Unbroken from an unseen horizon

Paved by our deciding

The road has been long

Longer than the memory of walking

But the road always led to the bridge

You can reach it together or alone

Stepping lightly or carrying stone

But none may go in your stead

And none may shoulder your load

The bridge casts shade

Sinister to the sun or heat’s relief

Decision made along your path

But the far side unburdens you of (dis)belief

In crossing the bridge

There is no choice

But no need to hasten

Nor harken to fear-filled voice

Beautiful mystery

You can’t see across

Until your feet tread the wood

And all behind you is lost
